Look what I made!

I finally decided I had to do something about all the books on the floor of my bedroom. My to-be-read pile is out of control and taking over. Accordingly, I moved the loveseat out of my room to Mom's--I never sat on it anyway, as it was piled with books--and put together these ubercheap brick-and-board shelves in the awkward spot under the linen closet. All the books on the new shelves, with the exception of Prowlpuss that I like to display because I love the cover, are my to-be-read books.

I also ordered three more books today since Powell's has free shipping today, and I bought two new books yesterday while I was out looking for shelves. If I didn't spend all my money on books, I could afford decent shelves, but then I wouldn't need them.

  1. Shelves are so expensive. I love our house, but it doesn't have a lot of space for that sort of thing!

  2. I was going to buy shelves, but that's such an awkwardly-shaped space that even if I'd been able to find shelves that fit, once I move they'd never be useful anywhere else.

  3. I like the use of the bricks. I have seen concrete blocks used but never bricks. Yay for ingenuity!

  4. Neat idea. I need to sort out my to read pile.

  5. Jamie--I got paving bricks at Lowe's. They're wide enough that I don't think the shelves will tip, but they don't take up as much space as concrete blocks. Also they were really cheap!

Cate--I need to sort mine too. I just stuffed them on the shelves willy-nilly.

  6. Books, books and more books. No matter how many to-read books one owns, walking out of any bookstore empty handed is like letting a child run through a candy store, allowing them to touch all the candy, then kicking them (literally) out the door and laughing in their face.

Hope you continue to find more space.

  7. I used to have shelves like that when I was living by myself. Those square, grey cinder blocks and finished pine. You're right, very inexpensive to put together.

  8. New bookshelves are always very exciting. I love what you've done. And can I be so curious as to ask where the door in the wall leads - maybe to a creepy, dark attic where everyone is too frightened to go.

  9. Ah, the door is just to a linen closet. It's not creepy at all--in fact it's very nice, with little shelves stacked neatly with old curtains, blankets, extra sheets and towels, and pillows. No monsters. At least, I don't think so!
