My evil twin

I just went and looked at the Writers of the Future contest blog, and they've got a list of the first batch of honorable mentions up. I did reach honorable mention with my entry this quarter, but I didn't bother to call to say it was okay to put me on the blog list--because who cares, it's just honorable mention--but right there near the bottom is a K.C. Shaw from Utah.

Whoa, wait a minute! I live in Tennessee, but apparently there's this Other Person impersonating me in Utah. And they probably think I'm impersonating them.

There's only one way to settle this. BATTLE ROYALE! I now have to publish more stuff under the name K.C. Shaw than M/Mme Utah and thus lay claim to the title. Or maybe we can settle it more amicably, like Wrathchild America and Wrathchild UK did, so I could be K.C . Shaw TN and they could be K.C. Shaw UT.

No, actually, I'd rather have a battle. For one thing, I've already won the first round: if you Google K.C. Shaw, this blog and my website are among the top three, and sometimes first and second with that "Shaw Resources v. Pruitt" page knocked down to third where it belongs.

Are you sure it's not just a typing error on WotF's part?

I suppose it's always possible, but the letter this quarter said to call if you wanted to be on the blog list. I didn't call, so I shouldn't have been on the list at all. Then again, maybe they accidentally typed my name instead of the person from Utah, who maybe was next to me on the list? Oh well, it's more fun to think I have a rival.

Awesome! I've always wanted an evil twin (or to at least be an evil twin)! Especially one who writes speculative fiction.

Luckily your editor (who seems very resourceful and cordial, too) tracked down my blog and commented about it.

Apparently what happened is when the honorable mentions were posted on the Writers of the Future blog, there was a typo: K.C. Shaw of Utah instead of Kirk L. Shaw of Utah. I contacted the contest coordinator to verify that it was me (since how many Shaws in Utah would have applied for the second quarter of that contest; the odds didn't seem plausible). She did confirm that yes, in fact, it was me, and has since fixed it on the blog.

Now there's good news and bad news about this correction:

Bad News:
Now we don't have a really good excuse to have a to-the-death thumb war.

Good News:
Now I have some new spec. fiction to read (yours).

Anyway, nice meeting you, twin.

K.C....I mean Kirk L. Shaw

We could still have a to-the-death thumb war, but frankly my heart just wouldn't be in it. I'm glad you got the mistake corrected! Congratulations on your honorable mention, and I hope we meet again in person when we both hit the top three (with Jordan Lapp too, of course). Then we can thumb wrestle! Or not.

There's always time for thumb wars.

Congratulations to you, too, on the honorable mention. Won't it be great the day we find ourselves in the WotF anthology and at the grand awards ceremony... (*sigh)

In the meantime, I hope you don't mind if I peek in on the Noisy Typewriter every now and then.
