Roadtrip music

On Friday I'm leaving for Atlanta and a long weekend of DragonCon, woot! It's a four-hour drive if I don't speed (and of course I would never, ever speed--not on Labor Day weekend when all the cops are out looking for speeders especially). Obviously, I need a couple of CDs worth of music to keep me entertained while I drive.

So hit me with some suggestions for road songs! I've got eclectic tastes in music--I like bluegrass and hip-hop, opera and metal, 80s pop and scratchy old 30s blues--and I want these CDs to be fun, fresh, and interesting to listen to.

Here are some songs I'm definitely burning on CD, to give you an idea:

"Where There's a Road" by Blue Moon Rising
"You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" by The Offspring
"Disturbia" by Rihanna
"Shut Up and Drive" by Rihanna
"Into the Night" by Santana
"I Gotta Feeling" by Black Eyed Peas
"Wichita Skyline" by Shawn Colvin
"Nothin' on Me" by Shawn Colvin
"Another White Dash" by Butterfly Boucher
"Me and the Boys" by Slade
"Long Way Home" by Norah Jones
"Orinoco Flow" by Enya

So what other music should I take with me?

I am a fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn while I am driving. also Rage Against the Machine and most things by Linkin Park. you might also try Soul Coughing's album "El Oso"

Ooh, thanks! Good suggestions, and for some reason you reminded me I wanted to get a few Stevie Wonder songs too.

Ooh, Enya. I have a disc made up of movie songs mainly from Highlander, Braveheart and The Last of the Mohichans. A nice Celtic mix. Have enough fun for all of us at the convention (and keep the heavy foot off the gas pedal).

I hadn't even thought of movie soundtrack music! Thanks!

Alan is right, Last of the Mohichans had an awesome soundtrack.

Sounds cool. I'll check it out. :)

I third the motion for Last of the Mohicans. Awesome record. Also try Peter Gabriel's soundtrack for the movie "Passion of the Christ." One of the best.

Isn't the ultimate road trip song Dylan's "Like a rolling stone" ?

speaking of which, i heart the rolling stones. maybe throw in some hendrix "all along the watchtower" and you're golden.

Jeremy--I like Peter Gabriel! Thanks!

Horror Girl--I can't listen to Dylan without remembering in lurid detail the difficult tooth extraction I had years ago, during which time the dentist played a Greatest Hits of Bob Dylan over and over and over.

Hendrix and the Stones, now, are definitely okay. :)

Something you can sing along to. I think 80's music is always good for a road trip. Bob Dylan is a personal favourite so I would recommend him. And David Bowie.

David Bowie--oh gosh, you made me remember I've got the Labyrinth soundtrack somewhere in this house. Definitely gotta find that!

Bon Jovi, Bon Jovi, Bon Jovi - and you have to sing along at the top of your voice.

I intend to arrive in Atlanta hoarse from singing! I hadn't thought of Bon Jovi in years, but I think "Bad Medicine" might be a good roadtrip song. :)

I've recently become a huge fan of the Cape Breton (Canada) band, Forever. They've got some great songs that you can find on Amazon.com digital downloads:

"My Way" and "Free" from the "Something to Dream Of" CD and "War Cry" and "Falling" from the "Welcome to Forever" CD.

Also, "Never Say Die" and "Blaze of Glory" by Jon Bon Jovi.

"Pursuit of Happiness" by Nuno Bettencourt.

"Youth Gone Wild," by Skid Row.

"Hero" and "Collide" by Skillet. *

"Copperhead Road," "The Week of Living Dangerously" and "Devil's Right Hand," by Steve Earle.

"Rawkfist" by Thousand Foot Krutch. *

"Crash" and "Desperate" by Decyfer Down. *

"Rise Up," "All We Have Is Now," "Game On," "321," "Phoenix Rising" and "Southern Hospitality" by Disciple. *

* Christian, but they rock! :)

Oh, awesome, thanks! Just the mention of "Copperhead Road" is helpful--I love that song and hadn't thought of it in a while. I'll definitely check out the other stuff too. Thanks!
