Off the grid, man

Frequently I complain, usually on Twitter, about our lawnmower. It is--was, rather--one of those gas-powered push mowers that you have to hold the little bar or lever up while you mow or the engine shuts down.

It finally died the other day. Mom decided to buy a new one, but we talked it over first. We both agreed to try one of those old-fashioned hand mowers, the kind almost everyone had when I was a kid.

Well, I love it. It's light, maneuverable, and requires no gas. I just push it along and it goes whirr and cuts the grass--and does a much better job than our old mower. We're lucky in that our yard, though large, is relatively smooth; there aren't many little hillocks or tuffets to navigate. It's so fun to use I want to mow every day.

So here's to trying something old and finding it works just fine! But don't expect me to go back to typewriters.

You want to mow everyday? To bad you don't live closer. I could use some lawn care help. ;)

I honestly had a moment yesterday afternoon when I thought, "I could mow people's lawns and make lots of money!" I'm still 10 years old in my mind.

I have one too, K.C It came from the first house I bought back in... OMG 1980... Oh my, doesn't time fly.

I keep it so when the world runs out of power I will still have wonderful lawns. It's great for keeping you fit.

Natalie--Our emergencies are every day. We live life on the edge!

Jarmara--We had one when I was a kid, but it was so rusty and dull it wouldn't cut grass anymore. I remember I liked to push it around anyway.

There's no way I am ever using a push mower. You're mad. I use an electric one, but then our gardens are rather small and a lead probably wouldn't stretch to the end of yours. Plus, I need something that collects my cuttings for me. I hate raking.

They had a push mower that collected clippings in a bag, but in my childhood experience of mowing lawns, those bags never work. We just rake them up.
