Money is no object, apparently

Holy crap, it's Monday again and I haven't posted all week. I can't even use the excuse that I'm busy, because I'm not.

I did talk my mom into coming to Atlanta with me this Labor Day weekend. We're both going to DragonCon! My mom and I get along really well, obviously; plus she's a big SF fan. I think she'll have a lot of fun, plus we're going to split the hotel room, which will save me a bunch of money. Except that if I were going by myself, I'd be staying at the same cheap hotel in Marietta that I stayed last time. Now that Mom's going with me, we decided to book into a downtown Atlanta hotel--the Westin Peachtree, which has just been added as one of the convention hotels!

I've never stayed in a really fancy hotel before. I need a nicer suitcase.

Nice hotels are neat. You have to open much less doors.

My mum claims not to like scifi/fantasy/weird stuff and yet whenever I sit her down to watch something she loves it.

We stayed at the Westin last year & really liked it. While it wasn't an official host hotel last year, they'd already started using it for some convention programming (the alternate history/steampunk stuff). Nice pool too - after checking in Thursday afternoon, I had the pool all to myself! I imagine it got a little busier later on, but I never had time to return...

The Westin also has a nice program that can save you a few bucks (at least, they did last year) -- for any day that you decline maid service, you get a $5 voucher that can be used in the hotel restaurants. We used this to get some free breakfasts at the Starbucks in the lobby. (And it's really more than $5 in savings, since you also don't have to leave a tip for the housekeeper.)

This year I'll be at the Hilton, unless plans change. (We were booked at the Hilton last year, but then switched to the Westin because we got a great deal.)

See you there!

Sweet! I really need to find a con...all the horror-related one's are a little too bloody for me, I fear. And I'm not smart enough to go sci-fi.

Natalie--I'm all for no door-opening.

Cate--That's how my mom is with fantasy. She'll watch anything SF but she claims not to like fantasy.

Kevin--The Westin looks wonderful. I didn't even think about the pool, although I'm not a big swimmer (and we'll probably be too busy anyway to swim). I hope they're still having the maid service voucher thingy; that sounds like a good deal!

Aaron--Come to DragonCon! It's not just about books; they have massive amounts of activities/panels available for anything even tangentially related to specfic of all kinds. And it's loads of fun!

You guys are going to have so much fun! I'm thrilled you're both going. Looks like a great program too (I hit the website). Yippee!

We're going to have a blast, I can tell. You ought to come too! There's so much to do in Atlanta besides just the convention. You and the boys could tool around going to the aquarium and museums and stuff (and hitting occasional kid-friendly convention things) and Richard would be in geek heaven. :)
