Good night, Jasper, 1996-2008

My dog Jasper died tonight. He was very sick, so I called the vet (a saint who makes housecalls) and she and her assistant came out and helped him go. It was very peaceful, and he slipped away in just a few minutes. We buried him in my mom's back yard. Next spring we'll plant a dogwood tree over him.

If anyone mentions the rainbow bridge I will cry all over the internets and everyone might drown. But Jasper was a Newfie, so he will swim out and rescue everyone.

Sleep tight, my good dog. I love you.

I'm so sorry. We had to say goodbye to our old dog last year. My sympathy.

Thanks, Camille and Cate. I feel better this morning. I called in sick because I look like someone hit me in both eyes, and Mom and I are going to go see a movie or something together.

Take care...dogwoods are beautiful. A fitting tribute to a good friend.

Losing pets is much harder than losing people. At least to me. I fondly remember every animal I ever had, including the toads and turtles.

My sincere sympathy.

I think you're right--Mom and I were talking about it yesterday, and she pointed out that Jasper and I were hardly separated at all for eleven years, barring a day or two. Not having him around seems like the world is off-kilter somehow.
